Here's What's Happening at The American Legion

The use of the poppy to symbolically commemorate the fallen soldier dates back to World War I. The tradition was inspired by the 1915 poem "In Flanders Fields" by Canadian soldier John McCrae who wrote the poem following the death and burial of his good friend Lt. Alexis Helmer who fell at the Battle of Ypres in Belgium. Major McCrae observed the blood red flowers, common on the Western front, growing among the graves of the soldiers as if there with intent to remind passersby of those who sacrificed all. McCrae was so moved by the sight, he included the flower in the first line of his poem, "In Flanders Fields the poppies blow between the crosses row on row."

In 1920, the poppy became the official flower of the American Legion to memorialize soldiers who fought and died in the war. The distribution of the poppies became a national program of the American Legion in 1924. Each year, led by the American Legion Auxiliary, poppies are distributed by members of the American Legion Family. The person receiving the poppy is asked to make a donation to the "Poppy Fund," a fund created for the sole purpose of helping veterans, active duty military and their families with medical and financial needs.

As Memorial Day approaches, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 7, the American Legion Post 7 and the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 7, will offer tribute to those who have gone before by wearing the symbolic poppy in remembrance of their sacrifice and asking others to do the same. Donations received for this honor will be added to the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 7 Poppy Fund to offer financial assistance to our local veterans, active military and their families. What better way to recognize the ultimate sacrifice of our soldiers than by taking care of those in our own community.
